يرجع اختيار رواية "إنجلترا، إنجلترا" وتفضيلها من بين الأعمال الأخرى للروائي جوليان بارنس لتركيزها على فكرة "البريطانية" بدرجة كبيرة. يهدف البحث إلى تحليل معاني مفهوم كلمة "بريطاني" عند جوليان بارنس وتحويل الرواية إلى سخرية لاذعة وذلك في شخص النظام البريطاني في أواخر القرن العشرين. وقد استطاع الكاتب أن يطور فكرة الإبداع والتزييف والمزج بين كل ما هو حقيقي ومخادع، حيث أنه اعتبر هذا العمل بمثابة خطاب موجه إلي بلده وشعبه. يوضح البحث هزيمة بريطانيا حقيقة وتلاشي عظمتها كإمبراطوريه عظمي وذلك عن طريق سرد شخصياتها للأحداث ومنهم سير جاك بيتمان وهو صاحب مشروع سياحي عباره عن إعادة هيكلة بريطانيا بشكل مصغر في صورة مزار سياحي يجمع كل القيم الحضارية من بناء وأشخاص وأفكار بريطانية المنشأ. ويساعده في هذا المشروع فريق عمل كامل على رأسه بطلة القصة مارثا كوشرن وتصويرها كأنها بريطانيا الوطن لمرورها بعدة مراحل هي نفس المراحل التي مرت بها بريطانيا في نهاية هذا العصر ومعها عشيقها بول هاريسون ووظيفته صائد أفكار العمليات في المشروع.
The paper is concerned with Julian Barnes' England, England, mainly chosen from among Barnes’ other novels for its great current interest in the fictional exploration of Englishness, something that was just a marginal concern in his earlier novels,. The main aim of this paper is to conduct an analysis of what it means to be English as a concept for Julian Barnes, in the sense that the novel turns out to be a sharp-edged satire of Englishness at the end of the 20th century. In England, England Barnes could develop the idea of creation, fakery and the dichotomy between the replica and the original. In his opinion "I mean I could have treated the idea of the fake and the replica ...England, England is a letter to my own country at the turn of the millennium". The real England is failing: her empire lost, her aspirations to greatness subsiding and her history fading. Megalomaniacal entrepreneur Sir Jack Pitman hits upon the idea of creating a theme park version of the original on the Isle of Wight (renamed simply the Island). His creative team includes Martha Cochraine, whose own childhood disappointments and unfulfilled dreams Barnes unfolds to the reader in the opening chapters, assisted by her grateful lover Paul Harrison, the operation's ideas catcher.
