|a يتناول البحث اختلاف علماء اللغة في (كان) أصلا واعرابا وزيادة ودلالة، فقد تنوعت أساليب النحويين في تحديد معانيها واعرابها؛ وذلك لأن (كان) فعل له مكانة خاصة في العربية من حيث كثرة استعماله في القرآن الكريم والشعر العربي وكلام العرب. وقد حاول هذا البحث تسليط الضوء على اختلاف اللغويين في أصل (كان) وتنوع الدلالة المعنوية والزمانية والإعرابية لها وأشهر مواضع الزيادة فيها، وتفردها بمزايا خاصة دلالية واعرابية. وجمع هذا البحث أشهر ما جاء عن علماء اللغة قديما وحديثا في هذا الباب مشفوعاً بالأدلة والشواهد من القرآن الكريم والحديث الشريف وأشعار العرب وكلامها. والغاية من البحث بيان سر العربية في جزئية من كلامها وجمع أهم أحكام (كان) في مبحث واحد، ومناقشة ما جاء منها. أرجو أن يكون البحث قدم صورة موفقة عن أم الأفعال (كان).

|b This paper discusses the different views of Arab linguists of the verb "كان" kan in terms its of origin, parsing, classification and meanings. Many grammarians have elaborated on the meanings and grammatical analysis (parsing) of kan, perhaps because it enjoys a special position in Arabic language- it is much used in the Holly Qur’an, Arabic poetry and prose. The study attempts to shed light on the linguists’ different views concerning the origin, semantic and temporal indications, in addition to the indications of its grammatical cases and the commonest positions in which it is augmented. The semantic and grammatical characteristics of this verb are also focused on. The research surveys classical and modern literature with reference to several bits of evidence and citations from the Holly Qur’an, Prophetic Hadiths and Arabic poetry and prose. This research also aims to elucidate and highlight the secrets of the Arabic tongue in this word, and to collect and investigate all related viewpoints in one place, hoping that this research will provide a convenient proper coverage of "the mother of all verbs", kan.
