المستخلص: إن عنوان الرواية (دمشق الجميلة)2 يحمل ذاكرة قديمة للمكان (دمشق)، ويحدث مفارقة مع دمشق الحاضرة في النص الروائي، والتي شكلت على نحو قبيح، وقد أسهم في هذا التحول مجموع الشخوص والأحداث، فدمشق الجميلة تاريخيا لم تعد جميلة في النص الروائي، لأنها أصبحت موضعا لفراق المحبين، ولفشل التجارب العاطفية، بل إنها تحولت إلى رمز للضياع. وصف المكان في رواية (دمشق الجميلة) ارتبط بالبعد الثقافي لدى المبدع، فحمله فكره، وطموحه، ووصف المكان وصفا قائما على التفسير، فلم يصف أمكنة جغرافية محددة بل عمد إلى تشكيلها تشكيلا فنيا يخدم فكرته، ووصف المكان وصفا صريحا مرتبطا بالشخصيات الروائية أثناء أداء حركتها في المكان، ووصف المكان المرتبط باللون، ليعبر عن الوضع النفسي للشخصيات، ووصف المكان غير البصري، ربما لشعوره أن الرؤية البصرية وحدها غير قادرة على إكمال الوصف. إن تعاقب المشاهد الوصفية، وتوحد الأجزاء الموصوفة، ارتد في نهاية الرواية إلى موصوف واحد هو دمشق، فكأن هدف الروائي من وصف المكان هو التمهيد لحرب تشرين، وكأنه أراد أن يقول إن حرب تشرين نتيجة حتمية لما آل إليه وضع المجتمع الدمشقي، وهو الأمر الذي دفعه إلى تحديد عناصر الموصوف (دمشق) والتدقيق في الصفات، ليرسم صورة واضحة عن دمشق الجميلة

The novel’s title “Beautiful Damascus” (2) has an old memory of the place, Damascus, but it causes a dichotomy with the present Damascus in this novelistic text, which has been formed in an ugly way. To this transformation many characters and events contributed; thus, the historically beautiful Damascus is no longer beautiful in the novel, because it became the locale of lovers’ separation, and the failure of emotional encounters. Indeed, it changed into a symbol of loss. The description of place in the novel, Beautiful Damascus, is associated with its creator’s cultural dimension, so he impregnates it with his thoughts and aspirations. Place description is one based upon interpretation. He did not describe geographical places in particular, but he intended to form them in an artistic manner which serves his ideas. He also described place both accurately and in accordance with the novel’s characters’ activities within that place. Place description is linked to colour so that it can reveal their psychological situations. He also described non-visible place because he felt that eyesight is not alone capable of description in a perfect way. The sequencing of descriptive scenes and the described items regressed at the end of the novel to a single antecedent, that is, Damascus. It seems as if the novelist’s description of place is a prelude to Tishreen War, as if he wants to say that Tishreen War is an imminent result of what the Damascene society has come to, and this is what drove him to identify the items of the antecedent (Damascus) and pausing on the qualities to depict a clear picture of beautiful Damascus.
