The same is the case with serious and deadly diseases, which can disrupt the process of building identity because they lead to very important psychological and physical effects. Therefore, a person suffering from cancer sees himself as being swept on the one hand by the disease itself and on the other hand by the medical world. While facing such an experience, the patient finds himself closed in a field that swings his identity and precisely his presence between survival and loss. This situation includes a new pattern of representations and a new image about the self itself, which will take a shape that is different from the old one, and thus the patient will become different from himself. Il est notoire que l'être humain au cours de son développement peut être confronté à de multiples obstacles, comme c'est le cas des maladies graves ou mortelles, qui viennent ébranlées le processus de la construction identitaire, car elles déclenchent de séquelles psychiques et physiques importantes, c'est ainsi qu'une personne atteinte d'un cancer s'y voit envahie d'un côté par la maladie elle-même et d'un autre coté par le monde médicale. Et face à une telle expérience, le malade s'y trouve confiné dans un champ qui oscille son identité et plus précisément son existence entre la survie et la perte. Cette situation inclue un nouveau système de représentations et une nouvelle image sur soi-même qui va prendre forme à la place de l'ancienne. Et par conséquent, le malade deviendra Efférent de lui-même, mais cela ne lui empêchera pas de continuer sa quête vers une affirmation de sa nouvelle identité.

مما هو معلوم أن الإنسان أثناء نموه يمكن أن تواجهه عقبات متعددة، كما هو الحال بالنسبة للأمراض الخطيرة والفتاكة، والتي بإمكانها إحداث خلل في سيرورة، بناء الهوية، لأنها تؤدي إلى تأثيرات نفسية وجسدية جد مهمة، لذلك فإن الشخص المصاب بالسرطان يرى نفسه أنه مجتاح من جهة من قبل المرض نفسه ومن جهة أخرى من قبل العالم الطب. ومواجهة لمثل هذه التجربة يجد المريض نفسه منغلق في مجال الذي يأرجح هويته وبالضبط وجوده بين البقاء والضياع. إن هذه الوضعية تشمل نسق جديد من تمثلات وصورة جديدة حول الذات نفسها، التي ستتخذ شكلا بدلا من القديمة. وبالتالي سيصبح المريض مختلفا عن نفسه، ولكن هذا لا يمنعه من مواصلة بحثه نحو التأكيد هويته الجديدة.
