520 | |b This article throws light on some linguistic as well as literary affinities between Arabic and Urdu. These affinities developed through a long history of cultural interaction that initially started between Arabs and coastal inhabitants of India. The latter then became the subjects of the former, starting from the caliphate of ‘Umar bin al-Khattuab in15AH/636 AD till 416 AH/1025 AD. When Ghaznavis took over the Sub-continent, Persian became the official language of India. After a brief account of these historical developments, the article takes a close look at both the languages to bring out some hither to unnoticed relations between Arabic and Urdu. It describes initially how the Urdu language evolved to be used as a lingua franca for the inhabitants of India, in addition to alluding to the fact that both Hindus and Muslims contributed toward upbringing this newly born language. The article highlights the potential energy of Urdu to express and produce a lot of translated as well as original pieces of prose and poetry. In some ways Arabic also became influenced by Urdu and borrowed few words from the latter. However in comparison with the impact that Arabic did exert on Urdu, not only in field of language (especially in word expressions and grammar), but also in the realm of literature (in poetry and criticism), the influence of Urdu had been minimal. | ||
