المستخلص: this paper attempts to present the epistemological framework and methodology adopted in one of the compendia of the Sunnah namely, the Musannaf by al-San‘ani. It highlights the academic standing of the compiler among the scholars of hadith. He is regarded as one of the early scholars who compiled hadith reports on the basis of legal categories. He thus presented to the Muslim scholarship a viable model for relating hadith with legal issues. The paper also deals with questions related to al-San‘ani's alleged inclination toward Shi'i views. It also shows his status in the eyes of the prominent authorities on hadith, shedding light on both their positive and negative assessments about him. Thereafter, the paper proceeds to critically evaluate the present work and the method adopted by its author.
