'Abd al-Ra m n b. Khald n (732-808 AH), the Spanish Polymath whose wide range of writings and intellectual pursuits did not benefit the Muslim Scholarship alone but equally profited the human knowledge as a whole, is recognized for his pioneering contribution in history, sociology, culture, civilization, economy and politics. However, his strong grounding in Islamic scholarship has received lesser notice owing to his outstanding contribution in the above fields engaging all attention. He had some profound ideas to contribute to the field of theology and scholastics as well. In particular, his contribution to the crystallization of the basic theological terminology on the Islamic view of theological pursuits, the question of determining the nature of Attributes and the issue of cause and effect and their actual status in the Divine Scheme call for earnest academic notice. Ibn Khald n took the Ash'ar approach in dealing with the matters of pure creed and metaphysics. On essential points, he appears in line with Im m Ghaz I. His views in the field of theology, which he considers as a rational system of defending matters of creed, deserve greater scholarly appreciation. In particular these ideas of Ibn Khald n need to be studied in comparison with another bastion of the Ash'ar school namely Im m Ghaz I . This is what the author has done |
