Taqi al-Din Ahmad Ibn Taymiyyah (661-728/1263-1328) is considered one of the two most prominent proponents of Hanbali school of thought. Although he has not written any work that could be considered as treatise on economy as such, Ibn Taymiyyah has extensively expounded on Islamic teachings regarding numerous economic issues in his several works. This article, surveys his various works as well as the works of those who wrote about his scholarly contributions and attempts to bring to the fore Ibn Taymiyyah’s thinking relevant to economy and economic issues. This paper particularly deals with Ibn Taymiyyah’s views on such economic topics as: the meaning of economy, the role of government in regulating the economy, the sources of income of a state and heads of its expenditures, the imposition of taxes, fixing prices and enforcement of these prices and finally the issue of coercing the owners of the commodities of public needs to sell them. All these views of Imam Ibn Taymiyyah are worthy of attention in current economic discourse, the paper concludes. |
