المستخلص: The writer highlights the exceptional leadership qualities displayed by the Prophet (pbuh) in the conduct of jih d (i.e. by means of force). The war like stuation in which the small commuity of the faitful had been compelled to live in the sanctuary of Madinah for almost the entire period of 10 years of the Prophet's life after hijrah, was imposed by the ruthless and powerfull enemies of Islam from all sides at all times. Despite these trying circumstances, with all the material disadvantages attending the Prophet's defense compaigns, he displayed extraordinary qualities of military leadership. The writer provides a survey of the major battles imposed on the Muslim Community of Madinah to show how remarkable was the Prophet's successful role as the chief inspiration in all significant endeavours of life and, when needed, as commander of the army of the faithful. He not only effectively defended his community and its vital material and spiritual interests against all odds and aggressions, but also ensured strict observance of the war ethics, the writer concludes.
