Studies in general text and text grammar have received great focus in modern linguistics in recent times. The methods adopted in these studies have been found helpful in evaluating literary and religious texts evolving out of different traditions. This paper attempts to explain the terms, "textuality" or "text grammar", and their given principles in the English and Arabic linguistic studies and traces the evolution of this discussion in modern linguistics since the last century. Thereafter, the writer surveys the rich literature of classical Arabic linguistics. He demonstrates that essential components of textual linguistics have conspicususly been present in classical Arabic literary studies. He shows, by citing great masters of the Arabic literary tradition, that these giants skillfully used textual aspects, inter-alia, to establish the Divine Origin and literary inimitability of the Qur’an. |
