The problem of classifying knowledge has engaged early Muslim scholars and philosophers. Many outstanding philosophers from al-Farabi, Ibn Sina to Imam al Ghazali, Razi and Ibn Khaldun have addressed themselves to this problem and provided definite hierarchy in knowledge from their perspectives. This issue has been a familiar topic of discussion in the Muslim scholarly tradition long before the modern Western academia. In recent times, a number of writers have been explaining the classifications of the various classical Muslim thinkers to familiarize their readers with their contributions. However, little attention has been paid to comprehend the basic criteria adopted by these classical masters in their respective classifications. This paper attempts to discern these criteria that guided the past thinkers and to explore the prospects of utilizing them to solve the problems of current academic programming and prioritization. According to the writer, present scholarship is still unable to maintain clarity of vision about knowledge, its essential unity of source and ultimate objective. This confusion is evidenced by the dichotomy of ‘this worldly’ and ‘that worldly’, which still appears to influence some quarters. |
