المستخلص: لقد حرص النحاة في درسهم النحوي والصرفي على استقراء اللغة: مفرداتها وتراكيبها، ومن ثم تمييز المصطلحات بوضع الحدود لها، وبيان شروطها وأقسامها للخلوص إلى قوانين تحكم تأليف الكلام بما يحقق وظيفة اللغة الاتصالية. وقد كان تناولهم لمجموعة من الكلمات تحت مسمى "اسم الفعل" إثر ملاحظة علمية؛ لاتفاقها في مجموعة من الخصائص الشكلية أو الدلالية. إلا أن ذهابهم إلى اتباعها إلى واحد من أقسام الكلمة، ومن ثم اصطلاحهم على تسميتها "أسماء الأفعال" خلق اضطرابا في درسهم لهذه الكلمات. وعليه جاءت هذه الورقة البحثية محاولة للربط بين جهود القدماء وآراء المحدثين؛ وصولا إلى ترجيح ما يتناسب مع منهج الدرس اللغوي السليم. وذلك من خلال تناول العناصر الآتية: -حد اسم الفعل وتصنيفه بين أقسام الكلام مثل: آراء النحاة القدماء، وآراء المحدثين، -الغرض من أسماء الأفعال عند النحاة وعلماء اللغة المحدثين، -الأحكام النحوية الخاصة بأسماء الأفعال، ويتناول ما يلي: التنوين كعلامة اسمية، ونيابة اسم الفعل عن الفعل، ويشمل: انقسامه بأقسام الفعل، وإعماله عمل الفعل على ضعف، مشابهته للحروف، والخلاف حول تأثر اسم الفعل بالعوامل، -أنواع أسماء الأفعال بين القياس والسماع، -نتائج الدراسة.

The grammarians, in their grammatical and morphological studies, were careful to extrapolate the language: its vocabulary and structure, and then to distinguish terminology by identifying them, and defining their terms and parts in order to reach the rules that control speech synthesis to achieve the function of the communicative language. Their addressing of a group of words under "verbal noun" term was because of a scientific observation; for their sameness in a set of formal or semantic properties. However, the grammarian's' confirmation to follow those terms is related to one of the word parts. Furthermore, their agreement to call them "verbal nouns" created confusion in their study of these words. Therefore, this research paper is an attempt to link the efforts of the ancients and the opinions of the modernists to prefer what suits the proper linguistic lesson. This is done by addressing the following elements: -the "verbal noun" and its classification according to the parts of speech such as the opinions of the ancient grammarians, and the opinions of the modernists.
-The purpose of the "verbal nouns" according to the grammarians and modern linguists.
-The grammatical rules related to the "Verbal nouns".
The research also addresses the following: the nunation as a noun sign and the verbal noun predication to the verb, which includes: its division as the verb partition. This includes doing the same function of the verb (not completely), its similarity to the letters, and the dispute about the fact that the verbal noun is being influenced by the factors.
– The types of verbal noun (regarding Al Qias and Al Smaa).
