إن البحث في الموسيقي العربية أمر في غاية المتعة، ويتطلب علماً بما ألفته الأذن العربية من اعتماد أوزان معينة على وفق نغم منتظم دقيق يتماشى والذوق العربي السليم الذي يميل إلى محاكاة المزاج العربي المبني على الفطرة الصافية. وعند تراكم الزمن راح الشعراء يبحثون عن نغم جديد يخرجون به عن نظام الخليل الصارم إذ ضبط هذا العالم أوزان الشعر العربي في خمسة عشر وزناً أضاف اليها تلميذ سيبويه سعيد بن مسعدة بحرا آخر. وقد استطاع الخليل أن ينشئ دوائر خمس تحتوي هذه البحور جميعاً، فاتحاً الباب أمام الشعراء ليستنبطوا منها ما يشاؤون من أوزان جديدة، ومع كل هذا لجأ الشعراء إلى اختراع أوزان جديدة ونوعوا في القوافي آملين أن ينقذوا إلى نغم جديد يتحررون فيه من قيد ظل مسلطاً عليهم طوال قرون عديدة. وصرنا نسمع بالمربع والمخمس والمسمط والدوبيت والموشح والبند ثم شعر التفعيلة وقصيدة النثر. وكل هذه المصطلحات تمثل مراحل خروج على أوزان الخليل ودوائره الخمس المنضبطة. وقد تكفل البحث بإيضاح هذه المحاولات وحظها من النجاح أو الفشل.
