المستخلص: يعد القطاع المصرفي التعاوني أحد العناصر الرئيسة للبنية المصرفية في أي بلد من بلدان العالم، والبنوك التعاونية أكثر قدرة على الوصول إلى المناطق الريفية؛ من خلال شبكة ضخمة من الجمعيات الائتمانية في هيكل الائتمان المؤسسي، لقد أدى القطاع التعاوني دورا رئيسا في اقتصاديات البلاد الأوروبية والأمريكية، وأصبح يعرف دائما بوصفه جزءا لا يتجزأ من الاقتصاد الوطني.

The cooperative banking sector is one of the main elements of the banking structure in any country over the world, and cooperative banks are more accessible to rural areas through a large network of credit associations in the corporate credit structure. The cooperative sector has played a major role in the European and American economies and has always been recognized as an integral part of the national economy. Cooperatives have an ideological base and economic objects with a social perspective and a different approach that distinguishes them from other economic activities, especially in developing countries. This paper aims to shed light on the cooperative system and its development in sub-Saharan Africa area, and thus to identify the features of the cooperative banks and their role in economic development. In order to achieve the objective of the study, the following question must be answered; Are cooperative institutions, including banks, an appropriate development option for African sub Saharan? In order to answer this question, a number of concepts, including the concept of the cooperative system and its applications around the world are addressed, the stages of development of this system in sub-Saharan Africa through different historical periods. Ultimately, the result of this paper has given the positive answer to the previous question, which means that the cooperatives in all their forms were an appropriate choice for African societies. This is because most people in that region still lived on agricultural production which still in the subsistence phase. In addition to the strenuous efforts that some countries have exerted in order to adapt to develop the cooperative sector in South and East Africa as models that can be emulated.
