يعتبر كتاب المستشرقة الألمانية د/ سيجريد هونكة ، "شمس العرب تسطع على الغرب" ، من الكتب القليلة التي يكان يجمع عليها معظم المؤرخون، شرقا وغربا، وإن كان قد لاقى قبولا أكثر في العالمين العربي والإسلامي، لأسباب عديدة، أهمها كثرة المؤلفات الغربية التي غبنت حق الحضارة الإسلامية، وعدم إظهارها بالصورة التي تستحقها، كحلقة مهمة من حلقات الحضارة العالمية الإنسانية. وعندما قررنا الكتابة عن منهج د/ ريغريد هونكة، عن أثر الحضارة الإسلامية على الغرب، وتناولنا الجزء الخاص بالحضارة الأندلسية، لم يكن الهدف، المدح أو الذم، فقد نال الكتاب من المدح ما يستحق، من وقت ظهوره إلى الآن، وإنما كان الهدف الحقيقي، محاولة للخوض في أفكار ومنهج المؤلفة، وبخاصة في الجزء الخاص بالحضارة الأندلسية، والتي نالت قدرا لا بأس به في صفحات الكتاب الطويلة، بل لقد أفردت المؤلفة الكتاب السابع والأخير، وفصوله السبعة، من مؤلها، للحديث فقط عن الحضارة الأندلسية، وذلك لإيمانها أن ما كتبته عن الحضارة الأندلسية في ثنايا جميع صفحات كتابها، لم تشف الغلة، ولم تكن كافية، لتناول الحضارة الأندلسية بما تستحقه، من تغطية، وتحتاج إلى المزيد من الكتابة. والحقيقة أن د/ هونكة قد تجردت تجرداً، يصعب أن نجده كثيرا في كتابات الكثير من المستشرقين الذين تناولوا، الكتابة عن الحضارة الإسلامية شرقا وغربا في عصرها الذهبي، وقد جاء هذا التجرد بحكم نشأتها العلمية الأكاديمية الواعية، وقد أعطى هذا التجرد، مصداقية كبيرة لكتاباتها. فقد نظرت في الكتابات العلمية الأوربية لبني جلدتها، على حد تعبيرها، فوجدت قصورا علميا شديدا في تناول حقبة الحضارة الإسلامية شرقا وغربا في معظم الكتابات الغربية، والذين تناولوها، غلب عليهم إما التعصب، أو عدم المعرفة، لأسس وأصول وإسهامات تلك الحضارة، وقد أشارت إلى ذلك التقصير في بداية كتابها، عندما ذكرت، أن المتصفح لمائة كتاب تاريخي غربي، لا يجد اسما للعرب، ولا لحضارتهم في أكثر من ثمانية وتسعين ورقة، من محتويات تلك الكتب
