يقع سبيل قايتباي بشارع الصليبة قرب مدرسة السلطان حسن بمنطقة الخليفة ويرجع تاريخه للعصر المملوكي 1517م، ويعد هذا المنشأ الأثري من أروع آثار مصر الإسلامية لما يتميز به من جمع بين المهابة التي تتجلى في حجمه الضخم والدقة الفنية التي نقف عليها من ثراء زخارفه وتنوعها. وهو أول سبيل منفصل يعلوه كتاب في عمارة مصر الإسلامية، وقد تم ترميم السبيل بالتعاون بين المجلس الأعلى للآثار والوكالة الإسبانية للتعاون الدولي، وأعيد افتتاحه عام 2000 حيث صدر قرار بتحويله لمركز للحضارة الإسلامية تعني باقتناء وتوثيق الإنتاج الفكري المتصل بالحضارة العربية الإسلامية في مجالات العلوم والآداب والفنون والعمارة ويضم المبنى ثلاثة أدوار بها قاعات للبحث والاطلاع والمكتبة الرقمية وتم تجهيز قاعات المركز ببعض التقنيات لتقوم الدور المنوط به. ومع التطور التكنولوجي في تصميم الزجاج وتطبيقاته في مجالات الحياة المختلفة وخاصة في مجال العمارة نجد أن التصميم التفاعلي للزجاج أصبح له التأثير الأكبر من خصائص مميزة أهمها إشراك المتلقي "المستخدم" وإدراكه للتصميم وتفاعله معه فهو يعتمد على تصميم منتجات قابلة للاستخدام، حيث تحقق سهولة التعلم، وفاعلية الاستخدام، وتزود المستخدم بتجربة ماتعة أثناء الاستخدام فيكون المنتج مصمم ليكون أداة جيدة ذات كفاءة وفاعلية، سهل الاستخدام تعلماً وتذكراً. وعلى ذلك فإنه يمكن استخدام تطبيقات التصميم التفاعلي في الزجاج لإعادة تأهيل واستخدام منشأ أثري مثل "سبيل قايتباي" كمركز للحضارة الإسلامية ومكتبة رقمية حديثة بها قاعات محاضرات مزودة بشاشات عرض ومناضد تفاعلية تسهل من عملية البحث والاطلاع على كل مقتنيات المكتبة، والتي تساعد على أن يقوم المركز بالدور المنوط به دون التأثير على المنشأ من الناحية الأثرية والجمالية.
