Open and Distance Education is a teaching and learning process in which students are separated from the teachers by a physical distance which is often bridged by communication technologies. It is also an educational process in which a significant proportion of the teaching is done by someone removed in space and time from the learner. In Nigeria, there are two major Institutions that solely practice the ODE system namely, National Teachers' Institute (NTI) and National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and there are six other Institutions that operate the dual mode. These Institutions that practice the single mode have similar operational structure. The only two major differences is that NTI is a specialised Institute (like a College of Education) and it is only responsible for Teacher Education while NOUN is full-pledged University and conducts a wide range of courses in other disciplines. This paper generally explains the features of Best Practices in Open and Distance Education (ODE) in Nigeria. It has identified the necessity of enforcing the mechanisms in order to obtain quality output from an ODE system. The paper thus recommended that it is very necessary to ensure that strict compliance to the mechanisms is enforced, in order to have good output from the system.
