The Pragmatic Meaning or Effect of the Phonesthemes /ɪ/ /і:/, /u:/ and /ɔ:/

This paper is of two folds: theoretical and practical. The theoretical fold elaborates on phonesthemes in English with rather focusing on /ɪ/ /і:/, /u:/ and /ɔ:/. Adding to that, the pragmatic meaning or effect resulting from applying these phonesthemes will be explained. The practical one relates to choosing a sample utterance to investigate the meaning or effect these phonesthemes may add. The aim of the study is to shed light on the pragmatic meaning or effect which the phonesthemes in question may contribute. The procedures followed are: providing a theoretical background of phonesthemes with some emphasis on /ɪ/ /і:/, /u:/ and /ɔ:/, explaining how the pragmatics and morphology of phonesthemes may collaborate to add a certain pragmatic meaning, choosing an utterance sample containing such phonesthemes to show such collaboration, presenting what pragmatic meaning generally means choosing Merlini Barbaresi' s (2009:650) as a model, applying that model to the utterance chosen and explaining the sources which the language user employs to make these phonesthemes (in the utterance) communicate the desired pragmatic meaning. It is concluded that the pragmatic meaning, which the /ɪ/ /і:/, /u:/ and /ɔ:/ phonesthemes may add to the chosen utterance, may be distinct from their original meaning of smallness and largeness. |
