Pascal Quignard a choisi plusieurs manières de présenter son histoire. Les mêmes scènes reviennent, une fois racontée par un « il » impersonnel, parfois par « je» impliqué et d'autre fois par un pronom indéfini « on ». Les variations de position du narrateur dans ce roman mettent le lecteur devant la nécessité d'une réadaptation à l'univers du récit. Ainsi, l'auteur tend à jeter le doute sur tout ce qu'il raconte. Terrasse à Rome offre une ouverture à la réflexion du lecteur et sollicite sa participation. Pascal Quignard has chosen several ways to present his story. The same scenes come back, once told by an impersonal "he", sometimes by "I" involved and another by an indefinite pronoun "someone". The variations of position of the narrator in this novel put the reader before the necessity of a re-adaptation to the universe of the narrative. Thus, the author tends to cast doubt on everything he tells. Terrace in Rome offers an opening to the reflection of the reader and seeks his participation.
