مع ظهور الكوجيتو الديكارتي "أنا أفكر إذن أنا موجود" احتلت الذات مكانة بارزة في الفكر الفلسفي، وشكلت الذات أهم مقومات الحداثة. ولكن عندما أعلن نيتشه عن مفهوم الذات بوصفه مجرد وهم، وعندما أعلن "فرويد" أن اللاوعي هو الذي يتحكم في الوعي، بدأت تلك المركزية التي احتلتها الذات في التراجع والأنهيار، وأصبح نقد الذات والإعلان عن لامركزيتها، من أهم مقومات حركة ما بعد الحداثة في الفلسفة. وقد قام دريدا بتفكيك الكوجيتو الديكارتي من خلال المناظرة التي دارت بينه وبين "ميشيل فوكو"، حول تأويل الكوجيتو الديكارتي. وقد رأى فوكو أن هناك إقصاء حقيقيا للجنون على مدار تاريخ الفكر، وأن الكوجيتو عند ديكارت يقصي الجنون تماما ويستبعده. بينما يرى دريدا أن هناك إساءة قراءة من جهة فوكو لديكارت، كما يرى أن شخصية الشيطان الماكر التي استعان بها ديكارت تعبر عن الجنون الكلي. ويمثل الكوجيتو الديكارتي بلغة دريدا مركزية لوغوس وميتافيزيقا حضور. كما يرى أن الحضور الحاضر دائما للكوجيتو الديكارتي يتكون من غائبين، أحدهما الماضي الذي مضى وانقضى، والآخر هو المستقبل الذي لم يحضر بعد، فلا يتمتع الكوجيتو إذن بالحضور الذي ادعاه.

Derrida disconnected Descart’s cogito through rivalry between him and “Michael Fucolut “about the interpretation of Descart cogito. Fucolut has seen that there is a real deconstruction to madness along thinking history, and that Descart cogito expresses a real alienation to madness and a complete exclusion to it. But Derrida sees that there is misread from Fucolut to Descart, as he sees that the character of malice devil which Descart took that to express complete madness . With Derrida’s language, the Descartian cogito represents the logo centrism and metaphysic of presence. But Derrida sees that the present attendance is always for the Descartian cogito composed from two absentees one the past that passed, and the other is the future which didn’t present yet, so the cogito doesn’t enjoy the complete attendance that he claimed .
