أوضحت النظرية الوظيفية استحالة وجود مجتمع لا طبقي، فالمجتمع اللاطبقي أسطورة لم تتحقق أبداً في تاريخ الإنسانية. أي أن اللامساواة حقيقة مقررة وضرورة وطيفية حتمية. وأنكر علماء الاجتماع الوظيفيون تقسيم المجتمع إلى طبقات اجتماعية على أساس العلاقة بأساليب الإنتاج واستخدموا مفهوم التدرج الاجتماعي الذي يتضمن مراتب اجتماعية تعتمد على عوامل مثل الدخل والمهنة والتعليم وغيرها. وتقرر الوظيفية انقسام المجتمع إلى مراتب اجتماعية على أساس الثروة والهيبة والمكانة والقوة، وهي ظاهرة مجتمعية سائدة في المجتمعات في الماضي والحاضر والمستقبل. وقد كانت هذه المقولات النظرية للوظيفية محاولات لتبرير الوضع الراهن لتقسيم الثروة وهو الوضع الاجتماعي الذي أفرزه عدم المساواة، ولذلك فهو محاولة لطمس الصراع الطبقي الذي تزايدت حدته في المجتمع الرأسمالي، بالإضافة إلى تجاهل الوظيفية لدور الميراث الاجتماعي الذي ينتقل بمقتضاه عدم المساواة من جيل إلى جيل، ولذلك ركزت الوظيفية على الإجماع القيمي الذي يغفل الصراع داخل المجتمع أو المصالح المتعارضة.

It is therefore an attempt to obliterate the class struggle that has intensified in capitalist society, as well as to ignore the functional role of social inheritance through which inequality passes from generation to generation, Therefore, functionalism has focused on the ethical consensus that overlooks conflict within society or conflicting interests.
