تحمل مكة المكرمة خصوصية تتمثل في قدسيتها، حيث الحرم المكي الشريف قبلة المسلمين في كل مكان، وبحسب الحكايات العربية المتناقلة، يقع هذا المسجد في مركز العالم، وفنائه جزء من الجنة على الأرض. ويدور البحث حول فكرة المقدس في رواية "طوق الحمام" للروائية المكية رجاء عالم، ذلك المقدس الذي يغدو نسقا مسيطرة في الرواية منذ التاريخ القديم البعيد، ممتداً إلى التاريخ الحديث، كما تتداخل الفترات الزمنية وكأنها تحكم الوثاق على شخصيات الرواية المأزومة، كما تبحث عن المقدس كنسق اجتماعي مسيطر كذلك، وتحاول شخصيات الرواية المتمردة الخروج من هذا الأسر الذي فرضته هالة المكان قديماً وحديثا، حيث القديم يسير جنبا إلى جنب مع الحديث ويزوده بالقوة على الاستمرار. وتقوم بنية الرواية على عدة تقنيات سردية كتقنية الاسترجاع والاستباق السرديين وأحيانا الاستشراف، وعدة قوالب سردية، كقالب اليوميات والرسائل والمذكرات، كما يقوم بسرد الأحداث أصوات عديدة، وتقوم بعض شخصيات الرواية بتضليل القارئ. وبين هذا وذلك تروى الرواية من وجهات نظر متعددة لعل أهمها وجهة نظر (أبو الرووس) وهو الزقاق الذي وقعت فيه جريمة القتل التي تدور كثير من أحداث الرواية على الكشف عن هوية القاتل والمقتولة، كراوي مهيمن على سير الأحداث وككاتب يتدخل بكتابة نهايات لشخصيات الرواية.
