سانتياجو، بطل رواية باولو كويلو "الكيمائي"، راعي غنم من الأندلس بإسبانيا، ويرى في المنام أن عليه الذهاب إلى أهرامات مصر حيث سيجد كنزا. فيذهب إلى هناك عبر الصحاري وإفريقيا حتى يصل إلى مصر. تملأ المغامرات أيامه ولياليه ويقابل أجناسا وشعوبا ويرى أماكن لم تمر عليه من قبل وتسرق منه أمواله ويضطر أن يعمل ليستطيع تكملة مشواره ويلتقي برجل إنجليزي يبحث عن الكيميائي ويسافران معا إلى الشرق، ويتبادلان الأفكار، وعند واحة الفيوم يلتقي سانتياجو بفاطمة التي تصبح حبيبته. الكيمياء علم الحياة والملدة والوجود، ويقوم الكيميائي بتعليم سانتياجو كيفية ربطها، ببعض وكيف يمكن استخدام هذا العلم للسيطرة على اضطرابات النفس والفوضى والريبة. إن رحلة سانتياجو في النهاية تكون إلى أعماق روحه في ظل الأهرامات يكتشف الكنز الحقيقي في حياته. جميع شخصيات كويلو تقوم بالسفر بحثا عن ذاتها، ويقوم الكيميائي بتعليم سانتياجو أسرار علم الكيمياء والرقي إلى آفاق أعلى للوجود فكما يقول كويلو "إن تحقيق المرء لقدره هو مسؤليته الوحيدة في الحياة".
Santiago, the protagonist in Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist, is a shepherd living in Andalusia, Spain, and has a dream wrging him to go to the Pyramids, in Egypt, where he will find a treasure. Dreaming of the treasure at the Pyramids he decides to go to Egypt. His travels take him from Spain to Africa, through the desert till he reaches Egypt. Strange places, people and adventures fill his days and nights. He is robbed along the way and must work in order to continue his journey. He meets an Englishman, who is searching for the Alchemist, and together they go on a journey to the East and exchange ideas along the way. At Al-Fayum Oasis, Santiago meets the love of his life, Fatima. Alchemy is the science of life, matter and consciousness. The Alchemist teaches Santiago that they are all connected to one another, and that alchemy is the art of controlling them to overcome the problems of inner chaos, confusion and doubt. Santiago’s journey to Egypt is a journey to the depths of his own soul and potential, a symbolic rendering of Coelho’s own spiritual journey. All of Coelho’s characters undertake some form of journey because they need to find salvation and the meaning of life. Guided by the Alchemist, Santiago discovers the secrets of alchemy and life and ascends to new vistas of existence, gaining an inner peace and understanding. As Coelho states, "To realize one's destiny is a person's only obligation".
