520 | |b This paper focuses on two specific songs, namely “Long Live Egypt” and “Salute the Flag" which are performed during the New Suez Canal ceremony as a basis for analysis. The researcher analyzes the textual aspects of meaning- in the original texts- through cohesion. The principles of referencing, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction, and lexical cohesion put forth by Halliday and Hassan (1976) and Bloor and Bloor (1995) will be applied to the two lyrics and will be analyzed to demonstrate the relevance of the cohesive elements that are present in texts, which contribute to the overall meaning of the text. Understanding how cohesion functions within text to create semantic links could be beneficial to help decode meaning. Texture within a text is the result of coherence and cohesion. Cohesion is the connection or the connectedness manifested when the interpretation of one textual element (a word located in one sentence) is dependent on another element in the text. When sentences, ideas, and details fit together clearly and smoothly, readers can follow along easily, and the writing is coherent and a resulting sense of unity is achieved. Discourse unity, accordingly can only be established via the use of cohesive devices that contribute to text cohesion. Halliday and Hassan (1976) identified five different types of cohesion: reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction, and lexical cohesion. In the five main types of cohesion, the interpretation of a discourse element is dependent on another element that can be pointed out in discourse. One of the central issues of discourse analysis is the organization of discourse, the relations between text units. Cohesion is one of the text properties that contributes to the organization of discourse. The term refers to the unity, or the sticking together of the surface elements in the text. Lexical cohesion, the focus of this paper along with grammatical cohesion, refers to the semantic relations between the lexical items in the text. Lexical cohesion is about meaning in text. It concerns the ways in which lexical items relate to each other and to other cohesive devices so that textual continuity is created. | ||
