الموت مفهوم عام يكون مقابل الحياة وله عظمة بحجمها. يشمل مفهوم وفلسفة الموت وازدواجية "الموت والحياة" كل الكائنات بشكل عام والإنسان بشكل خاص. وقد شغل هذا المفهوم ذهن الكثير من العرفاء والعلماء والفلاسفة على مر العصور وقد اهتم الأدباء والشعراء على اختلافهم بهذا الموضوع بشكل متباين. وكان من بينهم زكريا تامر وأحمد محمود اللذان انعكس هذا المفهوم في آثارهم بشكل واضح ومشهود وفي هذا البحث سيقوم الباحث بدراسة آثارهم من هذه الزاوية. إن الموت والقتل والانتحار كلها مفاهيم نجدها تقريبا بين سطور كل القصص القصيرة لهذين الكاتبين وتكون مصحوبة بظروف صعبة كالفقر والظلم والسجن فتخلق أجواء مظلمة ومرعبة. إن مفهوم الموت ولفظه من وجهة نظر القارئ من الممكن أن يؤدي إلى تداعي معناه المادي المعروف أما مفهوم الموت من وجهة نظر هذين القاصين تعدى مفهومه المادي والظاهري وقد امتزج بمعان وأبعاد معنوية أخرى؛ تشمل أحيانا الأحاسيس والقيم والمبادئ الأخلاقية والمفاهيم الإنسانية وتدل أحيانا على جماليات كل ما موجود حولنا سواء كانت كائنات حية أم جمادات. وفي ظل هكذا ظروف قد يكون البعض من وجهة نظر الآخرين أحياء بينما هم في الحقيقة أموات وما أكثر الأموات الذين هم بالمعنى الحقيقي للكلمة أحياء وخالدين. سيقوم الباحث أيضا بدراسة المفهوم الوجودي للموت الذي يرتبط في آثار كلا الكاتبين بموضوع الفقر والجوع اللذين يؤديان إلى الموت، وسيتطرق كذلك إلى مفهوم الموت المتعلق بقمع الحكومات والسجون. بسبب أهمية البحث ومحوريته ولكون أن هذا الموضوع قد شغل حيزا كبير من مواضيع القصص القصيرة التي كتبها زكريا تامر وأحمد محمود ارتأى الباحث أن يخصص جزء مستقل له لكي يعطيه استحقاقه في البحث والدراسة.
