|b In situating text-messaging in the broader context of computer-mediated communication (CMC), much of the same need arises for establishing the interplay between what the technology itself affords and what the communicator him/her self brings to the technology. Most obviously, in the case of text - messaging, the equipment is small and, eponymously, mobile; it therefore affords users an in expensive mode of communication. With this in mind, the major theme of this paper tries to examine the use of SMS (short-messaging service) among a sample of 100 university students who live in EI-Dakhla oasis, Egypt The study also attempts to investigate the linguistic forms and communicative functions of SMS among the interactants' or participants' actual text-messages. Moreover, this study aims at getting some information about: who uses SMS, how often, for what purposes, and in what language(s)? Lastly, this study will try to seek an answer to the sociological question: Does new mobile communication technology bring about more human alienation (e.g. aggravating the phenomenon of mobile privatization as espoused by Raymond Williams 1997? or does it bring about more human connectivity? or, in other words, what is the impact of using SMS on the sociality practice of the subjects of this study. The analysis of the major findings of this study revealed that SMS functions as a communicative strategy for facilitating communication among the recipients of this study. Moreover, the major findings chart the emergence of new linguistic varieties such as the overwhelming use of the form of Romanized Arabic and English in writing SMS among the subjects of this study.

|a ثمة حقيقة لا ينبغي إغفالها تتمثل في وجود علاقة قوية يجب أخذها في الاعتبار عند دراسة استخدامات أدوات الاتصال التكنولوجية الحديثة في عالم اليوم وهي أننا لا بد وأن نضع في الاعتبار المردودات والتأثيرات التي تعود على مستخدمي هذه الوسائل. وتبرز الرسائل النصية القصيرة في الهاتف المحمول (أو ما يطلق عليها SMS). كواحدة من بين هذه الوسائل التكنولوجية الحديثة والمستخدمة على نطاق واسع في عالم اليوم كوسيلة فاعلة في الاتصال. تهدف هذه الدراسة من بين أشياء أخرى إلى استجلاء نوعية اللغة المستخدمة في الرسائل النصية القصيرة عبر الهاتف المحمول بين مجموعة من طلاب الجامعة في منطقة الواحات الداخلة بمحافظة الوادي الجديد بجمهورية مصر العربية (والتي دخلت خدمة الهاتف المحمول إليه في العام ٢٠٠٥ ميلادية) وأثر ذلك على الحياة الاجتماعية والظواهر اللغوية بين أفراد العينة موضوع الدراسة. ولقد خلصت هذه الدراسة من بين ما خلصت إليه إلى الدور الفاعل الذي تلعبه خدمة الرسائل النصية القصيرة في تدعيم الأواصر الاجتماعية بين أفراد العينة موضوع البحث وبين المجتمع المحيط بهم. كما خلصت إلى أن ثمة ظواهر لغوية قد برزت إلى حيز الوجود والاستخدام لم تكن معروفة أو متداولة على نطاق واسع من قبل.
