520 | |b This paper seeks to explore magic, witchcraft, supernatural and superstition in John Updike's The Witches of Eastwick. It tackles the case of women as witches and their endeavors to survive. The elements of magic embedded in the novel are exploited for diverse reasons primarily among which are to shed light on the social and religious, as well as the societal forces prevalent at that time, and to critique those forces. The town of Eastwick is considered a sample of the American small town community where the beliefs of superstition and magic were employed against them. Furthermore, the combination of myth and modern life is made in a sarcastic tone so as make this work different from others. | ||
