شغلت قضية اللفظ والمعنى أو الشكل والمضمون النقاد القدامى على مدى العصور الأدبية، واختلفوا في تحديد سلطة كل منهما في إعطاء النص الأدبي قيمته الفنية، ومن ثم في تقويم دور كل منهما في السيادة والأولوية، فجعل بعضهم السلطة للفظ على المعنى، وبعضهم جعل السلطة للمعنى على اللفظ، ورأى آخرون وجوب التلازم بينمها كالروح والجسد. والأدب يتبين بالأسلوب، ففي الأسلوب يتم خلق الفكرة، حيث تلبس لباسها الملائم، وفيه جهد يبذله الأديب وهو يحاول أن يربط الأفكار والألفاظ لتصوير ما في نفسه، أو لنقله إلى سواه بهذه العبارات اللغوية. ولا شك أن اللغة هي وعاء الأفكار، وكلما كانت اللغة مطابقة للفكرة نجح الكاتب في إيصالها. لم يصل النقاد القدامى إلى التوفيق بين سلطة اللفظ والمعنى، أو الشكل والمضمون، أو الصورة والمادة، للوصول إلى مقياس فني يعتمد عليه في التمييز بين أساليب الكلام الجمالية، وفي الرجوع بذلك المقياس إلى الصيغة والتركيب، أو إلى المادة والمضمون، أو لهما معا. وهذا البحث يحاول رصد هذا الخلاف والتعرف على أسبابه، والوصول إلى رأي يرتضيه الباحث.
