المستخلص: تحولت منظمة الوحدة الافريقية، منذ أواخر التسعينيات، إلى الاتحاد الأفريقي في عام 2002م، ومثل حفظ السلم والأمن والاستقرار جوهر الرؤية التي تبناها الاتحاد الافريقي، كما أشار إلى ذلك صراحة الزعماء الأفارقة في ديباجة القانون التأسيسي، بأن "ويلات النزاعات في إفريقيا تشكل عائقا رئيسيا أمام التنمية الاجتماعية والاقتصادية لقارتنا، وأن هناك حاجة إلى تعزيز السلم والأمن والاستقرار كشرط أساسي لتنفيذ برنامجنا الخاص بالتنمية والتكامل".

The Organization of African Unity (OAU) became the African Union in 2002; Peace and security are the essence of the vision adopted by the African Union. A set of institutional, structural and regulatory mechanisms were established with the aim of expanding its scope and security profile, these were the Peace and Security Council, the New Partnership for Africa›s Development (NEPAD), the African Review Mechanism, which constituted an important development in the transformation of the Organization of African Unity into the African Union as well as in the development of regional conflict resolution and the maintenance of peace and security in Africa. The establishment of the African Union coincided with the transformation already taking place within the framework of peace and security within the regional entity to assume the task of peace-keeping in its various dimensions.
