المستخلص: Gender", as a grammatical term, according to several linguists is the mode of distinguishing sex by words or addition of words. Since noun gender in many languages is able to play an important role in various linguistic contexts, the writer has attempted to shed light on this category both in Modern Standard Arabic and Modern English. To achieve this goal the category of noun including its definition and subclasses is investigated because this category in many languages can express gender. Moreover, noun gender in general is defined then description and classification of noun gender in Modern Standard Arabic and Modern English are offered. Similarities and differences between Modern Standard Arabic and Modern English in terms of noun gender are also discussed in order to draw attention to any common features or contrasts between these two languages. In fact, awareness of these similarities and differences on the part of the Arab learners of English may enhance the process of learning noun gender in English. With the aim of exploring the areas of difficulties that Arab learners of English may face in learning noun gender, a translation test that consists of two parts is included. Findings obtained from literature review and the test will be displayed at the end of this paper followed with recommendations and suggestions.
