شغل ما وراء السرد تنظيراً وإبداعاً، عنايةً واسعة من قبل النقاد، إذ لم يعد السرد التقليدي- في معظمه– يتماشى مع ذائقة القارئ الحالية من دون الاستعانة بحمولات السرد القصصي الجديدة، حيث خلخلة الأطر التراتبية للسرد التقليدي باتجاه سرد متطور وواعي، فالتطورات السردية الجديدة هي جزء من تحولات أعم وأشمل قد حدثت في النظم والأنساق الأدبية والمعرفية وبما يُعرف بما بعد الحداثة. وينسب مصطلح ما وراء السرد بإجماع الباحثين إلى الأمريكي (وليم غاس) الذي وظفه لأول مرة عام 1970 في مقالته (الفلسفة وشكل القص). ويبدو أن ميزة ما وراء السرد أنه نزعة مستمرة بالتشكل والإضافة ولهذا ترى (باتريشا واو) إنه من الصعب وضع تعريف جامع مانع ولكن يمكن وضع خطوط تبين ماهية وعمل ما وراء السرد وتمثلاته. وفي سياق النقد العربي تعود إشكالية تلقي المصطلح (meta fiction) إلى صعوبة نقل المصطلح بما يوحيه، بسبب كثرة المصطلحات المجاورة، فعمد بعض النقاد إلى تعريبه وآخرون عملوا على ترجمته وأظهر قسم ثالث الميل إلى التقريب من الحاضنة التي ظهر فيها.

In the agreement of researchers, Mate fiction attributed to the American (William H. Gass). Who use it for the first time in 1970 in his Article (philosophy and text format). And it seemed that the feature of Mate fiction it's a continuous tendency in from and addition. Thus, (Patricia Waugh) saw that we could not put a universal for Mate fiction, but we can put lines to discern the use and importance of Mate fiction and its representations. And in the context of Arabic criticism, then problem of understanding it back to the difficulty in narrating a term and what contains, because the increasing of the other near terms. So, some critics did tram slated it into Arabic while others into other languages. The third group of critics intended to approximate it to it's origin appearance
