المستخلص: What is most striking in the novel of Kiran Desai is the theme of cultural clashes, displacement, marginalization, alienation and identity crisis. A note for racial discrimination, poverty, insurgency, gender bias and longing for home can be seen in broad perspectives of globalization. The present paper delineates colonial neurosis, uprooting and bitter experiences of imagination skillfully. It is also a study of transitional phase of Indian culture. It throws light on the craze for the western values, glamorous lifestyle and manners in Indians. There is an impact of modernization and consumerism in all walks of Indian life. Rootlessness and its agony are depicted through the characters of this novel such as Judge and Biju. Discussion is made on longing for home i.e., belonging to the roots and searching a niche for a space in an alien land.
