|a تعتبر عمليتا الفحص والتشخيص من أهم الخطوات التي يقوم بها الفاحص وأكثرها تعقيدا خاصة إذا تعلق الأمر باضطراب التوحد إذ يجد المختصون في علم النفس والطب العقلي وطب الأطفال صعوبة كبيرة في فحص المريض وتشخيصه وترجع هده الصعوبة لخصائص أطفال التوحد وصفاتهم حيث يميلون إلى العزلة والانسحاب ويفتقرون إلى مهارات التواصل اللفظية وغير اللفظية هذا من جهة وكذلك تشابه أعراض التوحد مع أعراض اضطرابات أخرى الإعاقة العقلية وفصام الطفولة والتخلف العقلي وبعض التناذرات وكذلك وجود أمراض وإعاقات مصاحبة للتوحد، فنجاح المختص في عمليتي الفحص والتشخيص يساعده في تقديم المساعدة والعلاج المناسبين
