المستخلص: In recent years, scholars and critics have become increasingly interested in the concept of identity. While some theorists argue that identity is determined by inborn features and pre-established factors, other researchers insist that identity is an ongoing formative process that transcends predetermined definitions and demarcations. Louis Althusser, for instance, relates identity to ideology, claiming that ideology constitutes the very nature of individuals’ identities. Gender theorists, particularly Judith Butler, however, perceive identity as a constructive process that determines one’s gender and foster a collective sense of belonging. In literature, many writers have shown a similar interest in the question of identity and especially in the potential intersection between the literary and the political. Edward Albee, for example, has addressed the issue of identity, particularly the dialectics of the sociopolitical and the aesthetic. In his The American Dream, Albee presents different conceptions of identity juxtaposing the political with the artistic. This paper, then, attempts to examine Albee’s dramatization of identity politics, mainly class and gender identities, from the Althusserian and Butlerian perspectives in an attempt to elucidate the complex poeticization of identity in Albee’s work. The analysis seeks to examine the identity crisis that contemporary American middle class culture is going through and to study the reversal of gender roles and identities in mainstream society. It also attempts to investigate Albee’s staging of the spread of conformity and complacency in American middle-class society and the ensuing loss of individuality, freedom and ideals to uncover the intricate sociopolitical situation in post WWII America.
