520 |b Pierre Corneille’s “Le Cid” and Moliere’s “Dom Juan” incarnate the moral values that had developed in the classical era that preceded the political crises in France during the 17th century. The classical moral values were analyzed into two contradictory views. The first view is a positive that was adopted by Corneille in his play “Le Cid”, where we find the protagonist is committed to the heroic morals and family duties. Defending his honor, sacrifice, respecting paternal laws, self-control, national loyalty and the noble sentiments. All these issues show the greatness of the human being and his ability to overcome barriers before the classical intellect. The other view seems negative according to Moliere’s point in “Dom Juan” through which he presents his ideas against the dominant values in his time, such as marriage resentment, unfaithfulness and breaching the social rules. Moliere draws the character of Don Juan to embody the apparent pessimism that results from his hero’s atheism and his constant attacks against the religious values. These two drama plays are the most prominent plays in the classic age. They shed light on the classical age though discussed here in this thesis, conveying the ethical message to two types of audience: those who prefer the noble tone in tragedy, and those who seek entertainment in comedy. The classical intellect is represented on the stage and in front of the audience as a literary genre that can reach the peak of acceptability in the French society.
