اختار الباحثان الغور في أعماق قضية مهمة في حياة كل المجتمعات والحضارات منذ القدم وإلى الآن، ومنها مجتمع العراق، موضوعة تكاد تكسب أهميتها من خلال أهمية وظيفتها المعنية بالفكر والمعرفة والثقافة. إلا وهي النخبة المثقفة في العراق. حيث تمت دراسة خصائصها وأدوارها ميدانيا، كونها تشكل موضوعا ذو أهمية علمية تتمثل بحداثة الفرع المعرفي من علم الاجتماع وهو سوسيولوجيا (علم اجتماع) المثقفين. إذ يهتم البحث الحالي بالكشف عن أهم الخصائص التي أتسم بها المثقف العراقي في خضم المشهد الثقافي والأدوار التي مارسها طيلة العشر سنوات السابقة في البناء الاجتماعي عبر أدواته المعرفية إلى جانب أدوار النخب الأخرى الذين يشكلون مرجعيات للجماعة في مجتمع العراق لقوة تأثيرهم. أن الصعوبة الأولى والمهمة التي تواجه الباحثان في مسؤولية تجاوزها خلال البحث السوسويولوجي الحالي، عائق المصطلح وترجمته وأصول نشأته فالنخبة المثقفة (lntelligentsia) والمثقف (lntellectual) هما مفاهيم غير محددة فضفاضة قابلة للتصرف بها، خاصة أذا ما أمنا بأن المفهوم أو المصطلح يولد من رحم التأريخ. إن التعرف على خصائص وأدوار هذه النخبة يوضح خارطة حراك المشهد الثقافي بشكل عام وفاعلية المثقف في هذا المشهد والمجتمع بشكل خاص. لا يخفى ما للعامل السياسي وأدوات الإعلام دورا مهما في واقع مجتمع العراق بعد التاسع من نيسان ٢٠٠٣، الأمر الذي يفرض أهمية التعرف إلى علاقة هذه النخبة مع السلطة السياسية من جهة والإعلام من جهة أخرى. خصوصا وان العديد من تصنيفات المثقف تتحدد خصائصها من خلال علاقة بعضهما البعض والأدوار التي تمارسها النخبة المثقفة تجاه موضوعات المجتمع عبر علاقتها بهما. فالبحث الحالي أهتم بالكشف عن أهم الخصائص التي تتمتع بها هذه النخبة وأهم الأدوار التي أدتها بعد التاريخ المذكور آنفا.
