المستخلص: James Joyce was one of the greatest novelists twentieth century. in his writings, Joyce dealt with social problems of his country and he tried to reveal the corruption of his paralytic city, Dublin, in a collection of short stories entitled. Dubliners. This research discusses the idea of entarapment and escape in Joyce`s "An Encounter" which is one of the stories of Dubliners, in order to show how he dealt With such a problem. This research is divided into four sections. The first section is an introduction which sheds lights on escape literature. The second section consists of two parts; the first part focuses on the making of Dubliners, while the second is concerned with James .loyce's life, his career and his political views. The third section concentrates on the short story "An Encounter" as a good example of escape literature and discusses the theme of entrapment and the need for escape in it. The last section is a conclusion which sums up the results of the study.
