المستخلص: The research deals with translation as a tool for cultural interaction between civilizations and the role of the translator when transferring a literary work belonging to a culture different from the culture to which it is transferred, as is the case when transferring a literary work from French to Arabic or vice versa. Translation theories differed with regard to translating cultural meanings associated with a particular society, such as highly local slang or popular expressions and manifestations with religious reference between those who support adapting them when transferring to conform to the culture transferred to them using images and expressions that are familiar to the recipient of the translation, completely eliminating any linguistic diversity and those who reject this idea, because it prevents the reader of the translation from discovering different cultural horizons with all the different images and concepts that they carry that contribute to understanding and accepting the other, it also enriches the culture transferred to it through its interaction with other cultures. Among the advocates of this theory is Antoine Berman, a French literary critic, philosopher and writer who, facing the problems of identity and otherness in literary translation, established the principle of "literal translation", calling on the translator not to be tempted by his desire to adapt the text to the original and to integrate it into the culture of the recipient, but rather to strive as much as possible to maintain its spirits, characteristics and cultural references. This is the theory on which the research is based in its attempt to address the problem of identity and otherness in literary translation. This abstract was translated by Dar AlMandumah Inc.
