المستخلص: This paper is aiming to analyze the role of envy "Invidia", which cited in the second book of Ovid's Metamorphoses (Ov. Met. 2. 708-832). Where he narrates about how the gods' messenger Mercurius admired a girl called Herse, and when he reached her house to see her, she was her sister Aglaurus the first one he met. So he asked her help to reach her sister's heart, and she accepted but on a one condition, which was to give her a weight of gold. He accepted and went to bring it up. In meanwhile the goddess Minerva became angry with Aglaurus for two reasons; the first linked to a mistake the girl did to Minerva, the second linked to her attitude with Mercurius. Minerva decided to punish Aglaurus, so she went to Invidia's house asking her to infect Aglaurus with envy. Here Ovid expatiate in his descriptions of Invidia and her house. Then events continue till Aglaurus get transformed to a dark statue. There are two questions to be answered through this paper, which are: Why did Minerva chose Invidia specifically to punish Aglaurus? How the symbolic descriptions, Ovid used in his representation of Invidia and her affections, are contributing in knowing a lot of information about envy in Roman thought? In light of the above this paper is divided into three sections: The first displays the reasons of Invidia's manifestation in the story, through analyzing the nature of Aglaurus character, and the Minerva's reaction towards it, as Ovid represented it by employing the sights, the gestures, and the general atmosphere of the story, instead of declaring the thoughts and the feelings of Aglaurus and Minerva. The second section analyze the role of envy in the story, through analyzing the actions and the descriptions Ovid mentioned during his personification of Invidia, which could be divided to the following: a- The description of Invidia's home. b- The description of Minerva's visit to Invidia. c- Invidia's physical and psychological qualities. The third section sheds light on Invidia's affection on Aglaurus and its consequences. Then the paper reach to the conclusion which explains the most important results of it.

يهدف هذا البحث إلى تناول دور الحسد Invidia في قصة أجلاوروس Aglaurus الواردة بالكتاب الثاني من قصيدة "التحولات (ov. Met. Metamorphoses 2. 708-832) للشاعر أوفيديوس Ovidius (43 ق.م- 17 م.)، حيث يروي فيها كيف أن رسول الآلهة ميركوريوس Mercurius أعجب بفتاة تدعى هيرسي Herse، وقرر الذهاب إليها ولكنه حين وصل إلى منزلها كانت شقيقتها أجلاوروس هي أول من قابله، فطلب مساعدتها من أجل الوصول إلى قلب شقيقتها، ووافقت أجلاوروس على مساعدته، ولكنها اشترطت عليه أن يعطيها وزنا من الذهب لكي تساعده، فوافق وذهب ليحضر ما طلبته منه، وفي هذه الأثناء غضبت الربة مينرفا Minerva من أجلاوروس لسببين: أحدهما متعلق بخطأ ارتكبته الفتاة في حق مينرفا والآخر متعلق بسلوكها مع ميركوريوس. وقررت مينرفا أن تعاقب أجلاوروس، فذهبت إلى منزل ربة الحسد لتطلب منها أن تصيب أجلاوروس بداء الحسد، وهنا يسهب أوفيديوس في وصف ربة الحسد ومنزلها، ثم تتوالى الأحداث إلى أن تتحول الفتاة إلى تمثال حجري داكن اللون. يطرح البحث سؤالين رئيسين ليجيب عنهما وهما: لماذا اختارت مينرفا ربة الحسد بالتحديد لمعاقبة أجلاوروس؟ كيف أفادت الأوصاف الرمزية التي أوردها أوفيديوس خلال تصويره لربة الحسد وتصويره لتأثيرها في معرفتنا للكثير عن الحسد في الفكر الروماني؟ وفي ضوء ذلك ينقسم البحث إلى ثلاث نقاط ألا وهي: أسباب ظهور ربة الحسد بالقصة، وتصوير ربة الحسد، وتأثير ربة الحسد على أجلاوروس وتبعاته
