520 |b This research deals with comparative linguistics, and compares the derivational morphology of the nouns related to nature between Greek and Latin, which belong to the Indo-European family. There are two processes of word formation: i.e. derivation and compounding. The primary derivation is the creation words from roots, but the secondary derivation is from already derived words, and the compounding is the combination of two word stems or more. The noun can be directly formed from the root stems with or without gradation, or from the root or the stem by adding either vowel or consonant suffixes. Each suffix makes the noun having a certain meaning and semantics. Moreover, investigating the etymology of the words helps in distinguishing the rules of the changes that happen in the word formation. Most suffixes, found in Greek and Latin, were already inherited from the parent language, in addition to formation of new suffixes. Although compounds are an inheritance from the parent speech, the Greek and Latin differ greatly in their employment, and the Greek is wealthy with compounds, which the Latin borrowed some of them. our study is based on two texts, which are extensive in these phenomena, the poem of Hesiod Works and Days and the play of Plautus The Rope, written in old Latin. Hence, this play contains many formations that appeared for the first time and shows to what extent which Greek has a manifest influence on Latin.
