This piece of research attempts to highlight the question of teaching translation, in particular, at one of the Syrian Universities: Tishreen University. It manifests the falsehood of the deeply rooted prevailing belief that translation is more practical than theoretical, thus any one can teach it and there is hardly any need to be theoretically competent. The fact that has constituted a basis to call for rethinking the teaching of translation in a way that would optimistically restrict, if not completely extract, the encountered deficiencies. Meanwhile, this piece of research applies its study to two academic entities at the University of Tishreen: a) The Department of English—Faculty of Arts and Humanities; b) The Department of Translation—Open Learning Centre. In brief, this paper is trying to answer such questions as What material is taught-translated?, How is it taught-translated? Why is it taught-translated as such? and Who is teaching-translating it? However, a particular practical experiment has enriched this piece of research through distributing a ten-point questionnaire to the teaching staff at these two afore-mentioned departments, which makes their remarks a lucrative source of live comments on how things are really on-going. Admittedly, translation has already shifted from being a mere college course to university atmosphere where special attention is given and hopefully higher translationoriented studies programme would soon initiate.
