يعد تودوروف في طليعة من أشار إلى مصطلح العجائبي في كتابه مدخل إلى الأدب العجائبي وهو يرى أن العجائبي يقدم لنا كائنات وظواهر فوق طبيعية تتدخل في السير العادي للحياة اليومية فتغير مجراه تماما. حديث زياد بن عامر الكناني، حكايات شعبية تجمع قصص الفروسية، وتشابه في كثير من جوانبها حكايات ألف ليلة وليلة، وهذه الحكايات جزء من التراث الأندلسي الشعبي الذي يعتمد الرواية الشفوية الذي فقد معظمه، ويبدو أن هذا النوع من الحكايات كان شائعا في الأندلس. وهذه الحكايات تقسم إلى ثلاثة أقسام: قسم يختص بقصص الفروسية كما في قصة زياد بن عامر الكتاني، وقسم يختص بحكايات السحر وأخبار السحرة، وقسم يضم موضوعات شتى كحديث الفتى ابن الصياد وحديث جزائر العنبر وجزيرة الزمرد وضم البحث مباحث عدة، اهتم المبحث الأول بعجائبية العنوان، ثم عجائبية المكان، وعجائبية الزمان، والرحلة العجائبية، والشخصية العجائبية، والأليغورية، والعلاقات التناصية بين الحكايات وألف ليلة وليلة، وانتهى البحث إلى أن هذه الحكايات تعد تتمة لما جرت عليه حكايات ألف ليلة وليلة في أسلوبها ومضامينها الفنية وأهدافها التربوية.
