لقد حظي شارع الرشيد بأهمية تاريخية كبيرة من خلال طبيعة ما كان يشهده من أحداث حيوية كونه مرفقا أساسا في العاصمة العراقية بغداد منذ القدم ولحد الآن ... ومثل الشارع الذاكرة الثقافية والتاريخية الثرة بالنسبة للعراق، والعصب النابض منذ مطلع القرن الماضي بفضل مكانته التجارية والفكرية، فضلا عن كونه معلما سياحيا ارتاد أزقته أغلب السائحين الوافدين إلى العراق، والذي عد بالنسبة لهم مصدر جذب سياحي وذلك نظرا للتنوع الديني الفطري الذي امتاز به الشارع، إذ نجد موقعه مقابل كنيسة مريم العذراء، بالوقت الذي شيد في وسطه جامع الخلفاء ومآذنه الشاهقة التي عدت الأقدم والأكبر من بين جوامع العاصمة بغداد. إلى جانب ما شهدته من ثورات وأحداث متنوعة جعلت منه محطة استقطبت الانتباه من كل صوت كونه يطوي أحلى وأمجد المآثر العراقية والوطنية. وظل الشارع من الأماكن التي اجتمعت فيها السياحة والتراث وذكريات بغداد القديمة لا سيما الخانات والحمامات والأسواق، والطراز العمراني القديم الذي يعكس طبيعة المعمار البغدادي منذ إنشائه والمتمثل بالأبنية والجادات بوصفها شواهد حية وعميقة لإثاره وخصائصه المنطوية على عادات ومناسبات مرتبطة بأحداث عاشتها بغداد بأحيائها وتركيبتها السكانية المختلفة. ولا بد من الإشارة ضمن الحديث حول ذلك الشارع إلى أنه مثل النسيج الاجتماعي المتماسك في الفكر العراقي والذي وقف بصلابة أمام جميع المؤامرات لمحاولة تفتيته وإفراغه من المحتوى الوطني العالي. وبالتالي، فإن شارع الرشيد هو شاهد ومعلم لحضارة شيدتها حكومات تداولت على حكم البلاد فتركت كل واحدة منها بصمات عكست الإرث الحضاري البغدادي العريق.
