المستخلص: The novels of P. Modiano are all crossed by a recurring theme, vacillating between absent-mindedly between absence and the quest for identity; the charac-ters suffer because of a trauma-experienced during childhood, that of the aban-donment of one of their parents, or even both. An abandonment that will leave indelible scars on the identity construction of the characters, as well as on their development in a present that remains uncertain. These characters are condemned to live only in a decisive past, a past that will have marked them forever. In this present article, we will try, through some theoretical works, in particular those of Freud, Lacan and Winnicott, to demonstrate, while basing ourselves on some novels of Modiano, the dramatic and immeasurable consequences caused by pa-rental abandonment, by trying to define a term so heavy with meaning and heavy in the construction of a subject, namely, identity.

Les romans de P. Modiano sont tous traversés par un thème récurrent, oscillant distraitement entre l’absence et la quête identitaire ; les personnages pâtissent à cause d’un traumatisme vécu durant l’enfance, celui de l’abandon d’un de leurs parents, voire même des deux. Un abandon qui aura laissé des séquelles indé-lébiles sur la construction identitaire des personnages, ainsi que sur leur épa-nouissement et leur évolution dans un présent qui demeure incertain. Ces per-sonnages sont condamnés à ne vivre que dans un passé décisif, un passé qui les aura marqués à tout jamais. Dans ce présent article, nous allons tenter, à travers quelques ouvrages théoriques, notamment ceux de l’incontournable Freud, mais aussi ceux de Lacan et de Winnicott, de démontrer, tout en nous basant sur quelques romans de Modiano, les conséquences dramatiques et incommen-surables engendrées par l’abandon parental, en essayant de cerner un terme si lourd de sens et pesant considérablement dans la construction d’un sujet, à sa-voir, l’identité.
