المستخلص: Translation is the process of rendering aspects and features of certain text in one language into another language taking into account the syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic divergences between the two languages. However; this process carries within its folds some problems and translating idioms is a good example. This is due to the fact that what is accepted and understood in in one culture might be not so in another culture. The aim of this research paper, then, is to identify and understand the meaning of the Iraqi Arabic food idioms and their cultural relatedness, how to recreate the same sets of these idioms in English in a way that maintains the meaning of the original language, and finally, to score the obstacles encountered in translating them into English. Baker's (1992) framework of "equivalence above the word level" is adopted in translating food idioms into English. It is concluded that the divergence of the two languages is the most troublesome issue encountered in translating these idioms into English. Additionally, paraphrasing and literal translations are the most common strategies scored by the translation trainees in translating these idioms. A qualified translator should master a good cultural background of both languages in order to grasp the related concepts of these expressions.
