|a يحسن بنا قبل الخوض في الحديث عن صلة اللغة بالمجتمع، أو عن علاقة علم اللغة بعلم الاجتماع أن نضع بين يدي البحث تعريف علم اللغة الاجتماعي كما صاغه المتخصصون عرفه د. هدسون، فقال: «إنه دراسة اللغة في علاقتها بالمجتمع». ومع أن الغربيين لم يبرعوا في هذه الدراسات إلا منذ أمد قريب، فإن علماء العرب تركوا لنا في هذا المضمار تراثا قيمة، يدل على سبقهم من ناحية، وعلى سعة أفقهم في الدراسات اللغوية من ناحية أخرى.

Although Westerners did not excel in these studies until a long time ago, Arab scholars left us in this field a valuable heritage, which indicates their precedence on the one hand, and their broad horizons in linguistic studies on the other hand.
