The main objective of this study was to evaluate and challenge the claim that there is an epistemological rupture between western modernism and pre-Enlightenment Dark Middle Ages, a rupture between darkness and enlightenment, between ignorance and science. So, this study aims to clarify that the idea of the closed format adopted by structuralism, and became one of its methodological basis, is in fact a cultural tendency which grew up between the arms of the ecclesiastical thought in the Middle Ages. This means that knowledge was heavily limited to the clergy and monks, who copied and interpret the Bible texts and reject any other interpretation. As the secularisation of Western Europe increased, Structuralism reaped the fruits of that knowledge when it founded its literary criticism through the closed formats. Hence, it is clear that any attempt to understand the origins of modernist literature, especially the structuralism trend, without insight and awareness of its philosophical framework is doomed to failure. |
