This study is mainly set to investigate specific listening skills in an attempt to overcome the difficulties of English foreign language listening. It is mainly concerned with investigating the general hypothesis of the existence of a relationship between the students' proficiency in listening comprehension (LC) and their attitudes toward second language (L2) learning. The purpose, then, is two-fold: firstly, to investigate LC skills to show to what extent lacking or acquiring such skills may affect the success of communication. Secondly, to find out the students' problems, views, needs and attitudes toward listening in a diagnostic attempt to remedy the deficiency. It is concerned with a particular sample of first (1st) year Yemeni tertiary students at Faculty of Education, Aden University. A questionnaire and two tasks were used to get the required data which was analysed and interpreted for the purpose of characterizing the listening difficulties that prevent students to achieve real authentic purposes. The results indicated that the majority of students suffer from all kinds of difficulties related to both linguistic and non-linguistic aspects .Their problems tend to be both language and reading problems.
