المستخلص: يعد المؤرخ والبروفيسور حسين بن عبد الله العمري حجة في كتابة تاريخ اليمن الحديث والمعاصر، وتاريخ اليمن وعلاقاته بالغرب الأوربي وذلك من خلال كتاباته وأبحاثه وترجماته عن تلك الحقب التاريخية وعلاقاته بالغرب الأوربي المتمثل بالبرتغال وفرنسا وبريطانيا وهولندا والنمسا وإيطاليا وغيرها. وقد ساعده في ذلك اتقانه لفن الأدب والترجمة، ودراسته للغة الإنجليزية واحتكاكه بالأجانب ابتدأ من دراسته الجامعة الأولى وحتى تحضيره للدراسات العليا من ماجستير ودكتوراه ومن ثم عمله بالسلك الدبلوماسي كسفير لليمن في المملكة المتحدة، وقد دفعه شغفه بالتاريخ اليمني إلى ترجمة كل ما كتب عن اليمن بعيون أوربية ولجأ إلى الترجمة من الكتب الأجنبية الأصل إلى اللغة العربية، فساهم برفد المكتبة العربية واليمنية بشكل خاص، مجموعة كبيرة من المقالات والكتب المترجمة عن الأنشطة الأوربية في اليمن منذ القرن 16 وحتى القرن 19 الميلادي كانت الدراسات والترجمات التي أعدها البروفيسور العمري، هي الأساس الذي اعتمد عليها الباحثين فيما بعد لكتابة تاريخ العلاقات اليمنية الأوربية، ويعود سبب اختيار الموضوع إلى أهمية إبراز الدور الذي لعبته تلك المؤلفات في إلقاء الضوء على معالم العلاقات اليمنية الأوربية في تلك الحقبة من تاريخ اليمن، برؤية أحد أكبر علماءها ومؤرخيها، وقد اعتمدت هذه الدراسة منهج البحث التاريخي الوصفي، وتوصلت لعدة نتائج أهمها: أن الرحلات الأوربية إلى اليمن لم تكن فقط بغرض الاستكشاف، وإنما كانت أغلبها رحلات رسمية ممولة من حكوماتهم. أن المؤرخ العمري ألم بجزء كبير من العلاقات بين اليمن والغرب وساعده في ذلك عمله بالسلك الدبلوماسي وقربه من المؤرخين الأجانب وتعامله المباشر معهم، وسنتعرف على باقي النتائج في خاتمة البحث.

Hussein bin Abdullah Al-amri is a historian and professor, is considered a reference in writing the modern and contemporary history of Yemen, the history of Yemen and its relations with the European West, through his writings, research and translations on those historical periods and its relations with European West represented by Portugal, France, Britain, Holland, Austria, Italy and etc. What helped him in mastering this art were the literary and translation, his study of English language and his contact with foreigners, starting from his first university studies until his preparation for postgraduate studies including master and a doctorate. This was enhanced by his work in the diplomatic corps as an ambassador of Yemen in the United Kingdom. His passion for Yemeni history prompted him to translate everything he wrote about Yemen from a European point of view. His works contributed to support the Arabic library in general and Yemeni library in particular with a large collection of translated articles and books on European activities in Yemen from the 16th century to the 19th century. Later, Al-amri’s studies and translations constituted the basis on which researchers relied on to write the history of Yemeni-European relations from various aspects historically, economically and politically. The reason for selecting the topic is due to the importance of highlighting the role played by these works in shedding light on the Yemeni- European relations in that era of Yemen’s history from the vision of one of its largest scholars and historians. The study also aims to identify the features of Yemeni-European relations in that era. This study adopted the descriptive historical research method, and reached several results, the most important of which are: The European trips to Yemen were not only for the purpose of exploration, but most of them were official trips funded by their governments. The historian Al-amari was fully aware of a large part of the relations between Yemen and the West, and what helped him in that was his work in the diplomatic corps, his proximity to foreign historians and his direct dealings with them.
