|a يتحدث البحث عن اللسانيات الأميركية من خلال عرض وصفي للأسس التي قامت عليها تلك المدارس، مثل: المدرسة البنيوية الشكلية التي اهتمت بالدرس اللساني الوصفي، وابتعدت عن التحليل المنطقي للغة وفق النماذج اللغوية، وباعتبار اللغة ظاهرة إنسانية اجتماعية تربطها علاقة بالفكر الإنساني؛ وكذلك الأسس التي قامت عليها المدرسة التوزيعية التي تعد امتدادا للبنيوية الشكلية حيث قامت على الدراسة الوصفية الاستقرائية للغة، متبعة في ذلك منهج التحليل السلوكي؛ إضافة للمدرسة التحويلية التوليدية التي اعتمدت على انتقاد المناهج البنيوية، ونادت بالمنهج التحليلي التفسيري الاستنباطي للقواعد العامة في اللغة.
